Salamanca University, dating back to 1218, is the oldest and also one of the most prestigious universities in Spain. The university has more than 30,000 students per year, of which approximately 4,000 are foreign students, and is the main economic and cultural force for the town of Salamanca and its population of only 170,000 people.

Apart from being the oldest university in Spain, Salamanca University was also the first university in Spain to create Spanish language courses for foreign students, its first program dating back to 1929. Since then the Spanish courses offered have evolved a great deal and today Salamanca University is able to offer a broad range of Spanish cultural and language courses to students from all over the world.
